tidbits

Sometimes I get caught up with the fact that I didn't take a picture of something so I can't write about it. A picture is worth a thousand words right? So, how can I fully describe the moment without an illustration?  Here is a list of things I didn't (or can't) take a picture of that I want to remember.

*Our family sledding trip after the big snowstorm over Christmas break. Jack didn't want to stop. He went down the hill over and over and over again. Ana crashed and got a face full of snow. That, coupled with the hike back up the hill, made her enthusiasm wane pretty quickly. It was a beautiful day, though, and we stopped by our favorite pizza joint on the way home.

*Katie saying "I love you." She did it for the first time the other day and it was so adorable we had her say it a bunch of times right away. She only repeats it, but man is it adorable! She easily says more than 60 words and loves watching "Signing Time."

*Jack's sweet little prayer on his Dad's behalf when Dave got his eye practically poked out in an epic Nerf gun war he participated in. Jack was genuinely worried and it was so sweet to hear him pray for his dad.

Winter is settling in and I KNOW it is only January but already I'm feeling the winter blues set in with it. Last night I asked my sisters what they do when they are in a slump, and so now I have a list of things to beat the cabin fever.

What do you do to shake off the winter blues? I can use all the help I can get.

Oh, look, I found a picture of our scenery where we were sledding. Dave must have taken it. So pretty!

I was just talking to my mom and grandma about having winter blues! My grandma said something interesting (and I know it is different for an older retired person)...she said she loves this time of year because she can stay in the house where it is cozy, and not worry about doing yardwork, enjoy the relaxation that comes after the business of Christmas, and basically just take time for herself. I know it does not really apply to us, but I have been trying to mentally be happier about the situation. It is dark and cold outside, but that means more cuddle time with the family, and guilt-free consumption of hot chocolate! It does not always work, but it's a start. Anyway, sorry for the long comment! Hope Dave's eye is getting better, too.

Hey Erin,

Looks like you've got plenty more comments with your latest post, so I thought I'd post something here. Perhaps it was the appeal to facebook that generated more responses. I'll admit I didn't know you had a blog and thought I'd check it out after seeing it posted on FB.

You mentioned that sometimes you forget to write about special events where you have no photograph to post. It made me think about how some of the greatest moments in life transpire without a photo to remember it by. I have a few particular memories that I wish I had photographed. However, sometimes the picture simply doesn't do it any justice. I guess the consolation lies in the fact that somebody else witnessed the event with you. Our spouses are a witness to our life. We as parents are a witness to the life of our children. Together we remember the fondest memories and special times shared.

Thanks for taking the time to share some of your family's dearest moments, which help all your readers to reflect upon the special moments in their families.

And for what it's worth, sometimes my endeavor to take a picture has caused me to inadvertently miss that special moment rather than simply enjoying it as it happened.

Keep up the fun times outside...that's what always helps me shake any blues.

Great blog...great pics...and great posts.
