30

The family at Mount Rushmore
My 30th birthday came and went last month. It was just 5 days after we arrived into town and we spent the day with my sister Shari, who bought Muppet cupcakes and let the kids pick out presents for me (Mary Poppins and a swimsuit that didn't quite fit. :) ) and then our niece watched the kids in the evening while Dave and I enjoyed an Arctic Circle milkshake.

Many woman I know dread the big 3-0, but I welcomed it. It seems like the threshold of adulthood. Sure we have been married 9 years with 3 children and have been living on our own and being all independent and stuff, but NOW I am an adult.

I remember this woman that I used to babysit for. In fact I traded piano lessons for babysitting. Now I think she was getting a great deal, but I was happy to do it at the time. She had all these little kids and was so confident and laid-back. Her oldest was probably Ana's age at the time, maybe a little older. *  I think of her quite often now. I am sure she wasn't perfect. Her house usually needed to be tidied up a bit, like mine, but she sure didn't seem hung up on it and pre-occupied and apologetic of it like I am. I want to be like her. She was so comfortable with who she was that she never seemed ruffled by appearances.  She was just real and genuine and happy. Being around her made you feel good.  My goal for my 30s is to be like that.  I probably won't ever be as laid back as she was, but I can be just as comfortable with who I am.  I don't have to seek for the approval of others. I can just be me.

This doesn't mean that I subscribe to the "This is how I am, take it or leave it" philosophy because I absolutely don't. I believe people can change and should strive to be Christlike and kind and that everyone should have worthy and attainable goals that we are working towards. In the strength of the Lord we can accomplish great things and become better, even different, people.

But I do believe we can be comfortable with who we are along the process of progression. It is a process. Seeking others' approval, passive-aggressive behavior, and defending my actions (or inactions) along the way don't help me change. In fact they inhibit real, true growth.

So the question is, How? What am I going to do differently in my 30s? I can't do what I have always done, react as I have always reacted, speak as I have always spoken, and somehow expect to feel differently. I think I found at least part of the answer in a conversation with my mom a couple weeks ago. We were talking about people who always uplift those around them and how we want to be like that. They are gracious and kind. And they are also comfortable with who they are. So perhaps the more we seek to love others, the more comfortable we become with who we are because we no longer are seeking their approval. Our focus becomes outward instead of inward.

Songwriter Hilary Weeks said, "Don't worry about what others think of you. Worry about what others think of themselves when they are with you." And while I realize that I can't take responsibility for how others feel about themselves, I can seek to lift. I have realized that the more I seek to gain the approval of others, the more I offend them. But if I am focused on building others up, we are both elevated. Maybe that's off the subject, but I know that my friends that I am closest with, the ones that  I know absolutely accept me and love me, the ones I feel totally in my element around, are the ones that I stopped trying to impress long ago and started to just genuinely love and care for them. They are the ones who have been vulnerable around me, and I them. We dropped our defenses and simply loved each other. (That doesn't mean we always agree. Some of those friends have very different opinions about lots of different things than I do. We can have discussions and debates about things and go away every bit as friends.)

So here's to my 30s. I think they will be good. I don't know if by the time I am 40 I will be able to check this goal off my list of "things to accomplish" but I think the perspective is a good start.

*That girl I used to babysit now has a kid. Weird.

happy seventh birthday

Seven years ago I became a mother. I didn't know then how this little girl would challenge me, change me, and help me to grow. From the day she was born I knew she was strong. She squirmed her hands out of her swaddle while just a few hours old. She lifted her head to look up at Dave when she was just days old.  And while I walked her around our tiny living room I could feel the strength of her spirit. As she has grown I have seen that strength come out in so many ways.

Ana is not a follower or a leader. She is just herself. Of course there are times when she follows and times when she leads, but generally, she just does what she wants to do. She is passionate. She loves passionately, reacts passionately, gives passionately. She absorbs life like a sponge and exudes it in everything she does.  Last weekend we went camping and when we got to our campground she ran up to Dave and said, "Take a deep breath, Dad. It's fresh air!"

She loves horses and puppies and macaroni and cheese (from a box) and swimming and pink. She is sneaky and resourceful, and is hooked on Disney Channel. She will never pass up a chance to be one on one with her Dad. She is obsessed with getting new little purses and can't wait til she can wear high heels.

I love this little girl, and I am so glad she made me a mother.

party time

About 6 months ago Ana decided she wanted a beach party.

About 6 months ago she started inviting people to her beach party.

This was before we had even decided whether or not she would be having a party at all.

About 6 weeks ago I started telling the moms of her friends that she would be having a beach party in July.

About 6 days ago, I decide I had better start planning her beach party. We decided to do it on her birthday, since we had no reason not to.

It was a hit! (Both figuratively and literally, since her only requirement was having a pinata.)

MCAT list part 2

Well, the MCAT is done now, only 24 days more until I find out my scores. It went well enough I think. There were definitely some specific things I could have prepared for better but overall I think I did ok. I try not to think about it too much right now because I just keep going back to that sentence I didn't quite finish typing when time ran out on the writing sample section...

As far as the list goes -

We did get netflix - our first movies arrived last week. I watched the pilot and a couple episodes of Sliders online and I don't know if I am quite as interested as I thought I was. For one, after reading up a little, I found out that the cast changes quite a bit in the last two seasons, even the main guy is different. But, I am still curious as to how it all ended so I might eventually get to that point. Tonight I think we will watch the 2nd Indiana Jones movie in preparation for the new one which we have not seen yet (Erin hadn't seen ANY Indiana Jones movies until just last week).

The trailer tire is still not fixed, soon though.

I took a few new pictures of Erin and Ana playing with Erin's present I got her for her birthday, the Wii fit. Erin likes it a lot, so does pretty much everyone who has tried it here.*

As far as the new baby goes... not much is going still. Erin has had a few contractions about 10 minutes apart but not for much longer than 30-60 minutes before they disappear.

Here are some of the pics of the girls

Ana really wanted a turn when Erin was just trying it out so we got her an old cutting board to stand on and an old Nintendo controller to hold to be like Momma. It worked for a little while.

Cute little feet.

Erin's birthday ice cream cake. My mother and oldest sister (Leanne) were lighting the candles. I just thought this one was interesting.

Happy Birthday Erin!! (Yesterday)

*Thank you sooo much to Myron, who found the only Wii fit available from Provo to Ogden for Erin, and to Leanne for delivering it here after picking Joseph up from EFY in Utah.

B-Day

Thanks to everyone for the happy birthday wishes! Erin got me some cool underarmour pants for running/biking in the cold.

I used them today and they kept me warm in the snow while running! I guess maybe she wanted me to be a little more committed to running...

I also took my last final at 7:45am and I am done with the semester!!
