let's be friends

Katie and her best friend Kenzie. They love each other so much. Sometimes they bite and pinch, but they always forgive each other. Photo courtesy of my friend Jill.

Hello my name is Erin, and I am an addict.

I don't know how it started, but now, once I start, I can't seem to stop.

That's right folks. I am a controversial-topic-blog-comments addict. Anything from politics to religion to parenting choices, once I start reading CTBC,  I get sucked in. Before I know it, .... a lot of time has passed.

I like to think it comes from my desire to understand both sides of an argument. My opinions about things are in no way set in stone, for I never feel like I am quite informed enough to be rigid in my opinion. I am always up for an intellectual discussion about things. I like to wrestle with things and figure out how I really feel.  This is a good thing. But I always take it overboard and end up wasting a lot of time. It could also be because I am a logophile and my love language is words of affirmation, so I am always in search for wonderfully written words. Most of the time, however, instead of feeling more informed about an issue or uplifted or inspired, I come away with one striking thought:

Why can't we all just get along?

As a parent of young children, the most common issue that I am working with my kids is getting along. Last night we had a "who gets to pick the movie" issue. Ana wanted The Little Mermaid, Jack wanted Dumbo.  At first, they were completely unwilling to come to an agreement, but when it came down to the wire and I said that I would choose, Jack decided to agree to Ana's deal. (The Little Mermaid this time, Jack's choice the next 2 times.) This is the type of thing we deal with often. Katie wants to play, so I try to get my kids to teach her how so she doesn't just go on destruction mode. When the Jack gets frustrated, we expect him to use his words and explain how he feels. And we are trying to teach them that they don't always get their way, that other people have different (and valid) perspectives.

So why don't we expect the same in adults?

I know intelligent, respectful liberals who explain their perspective with dignity and tact.  I know a lot of close-minded ones who think all Republicans are cold, heartless, bigoted fools. I know intelligent, respectful conservatives who explain their perspective with dignity and tact. I know a lot of close-minded ones who think all Democrats are leading America to a communist ruin.  There are some issues that both sides are never going to agree on. So we gotta make compromises.

I know Christians who are intelligent, thoughtful, faithful and portray true Christlike love. I know Christians who are judgmental and thoughtless. I know atheists who are intelligent, thoughtful, respectful and portray compassion and respect for others. I also know atheists/agnostics that believe organized religion is the worst thing on earth and that all religious people are brainless idiots.  There is a way to believe in something and to understand other peoples' perspective. We can be respectful.

I know mothers who breastfeed, wear their baby everywhere, and don't let their babies cry it out and they are wonderful mothers who love their children. I know mothers that bottle feed, push their kids in strollers and let their babies cry it out for hours and they are wonderful mothers who love their children.  Yet so many mothers put each other down for not doing things the same way. We need to learn that there is more than one right way to do things.

I could go on. Alternative medicine vs Traditional medicine. Introvert vs. Extrovert. Feminism vs. non-feminism (does that have a name?). Whatever the debate, there is good (and bad) on both sides of the spectrum. I am not saying that we shouldn't be passionate about what we believe in.  The Bible clearly states that we should not be "lukewarm" (Rev. 3:16). I will always stand up for vaccinations because I believe it is best in the majority of cases.  I am also skeptical of alternative medicine techniques. But I recognize that most people make the best decision they can based on the information they have and their values. Putting people down, calling them names, and focusing on the negative are not the path to understanding and respect. Those practices are unacceptable in my home among my children so why are they so commonplace (and not only acceptable but applauded) in adults across this country.

Please, let's all just get along. Let's teach our children to work out their problems with respect and dignity. Let's expect it from our political leaders (or servants as they should be called, as they are elected to serve their constituents), church members, business leaders and fellow parents.
Let's see a little bit more tolerance. A little bit more compassion. A little bit more respect.

Let's be friends.

And I'll work on quitting CTBC.

leave tiger alone

Tiger Woods can play golf really well. I like that. And that's pretty much all I care about when it comes to him. I am sick of his name all over every news web page/show/whatever for wrecking his car. Quit it.

Jon Stewart pretty much said the same thing. Way funnier.

Basically, I hate how the media reports on stuff like this. They spend way too much time on trivial and irrelevant stories instead of informing anyone about what is actually important.

We have recently watched the first two seasons of 24. And I love the Simpsons. So, naturally I would love this -

I love the joke at the end.

It's my first day...

So, this is my first time posting all together with Erin over here. In honor of my first day I will share with you a small bit of THIS Simpsons episode.

Smithers: Uh, sir, we found the problem. Some idiot threw this in the
reactor core.
Homer: [sees charred doughnut] Success!
Burns: You did this? How could you be so irresponsible?
Homer: Eh... it's my first day!
Burns: Since I've never seen you before, maybe it is your first day.
Very well, carry on!
[Mr. Burns begins to walk off, when Smithers catches up with him.]
Smithers: Sir, that's Homer Simpson. He's been working here for ten years!
Burns: Ohh, really? Why did you think you could lie to me?
Homer: It's my first day!
Burns: Well, why didn't you say that be...[realizes] Yawoo! You're fired!

It's funnier when you watch it but oh well.

Also, I bought a song from iTunes today from The Special Goodness. I have been wanting this song for a long time. This video is goofy, as is Pat - the main man of the band.

Mashup

This is a mashup of a FOW song - "Traffic and weather" and a Depeche Mode song "Policy of Truth"

I thought it was pretty interesting.

President Obama

Didn't have work this morning so I watched this in some of my extra time-

It was kind of fun to see. I like the openness that can happen post election. Especially the husband-wife comments.

Here is the clip that came first

This was the closing clip

Tribute

I like this video.

I think my favorite part is when the blinding light of their rock is melting the demon. I guess I have a few favorite parts.

What do you think?

NKOTB

I got a spam-type email from the E-center saying the New Kids on the Block are playing a concert there soon and I can buy tickets for just $20. It made me remember this song: (those of you who are faint of heart may want to avert your eyes - and maybe ears)

And yes, they did say "It ain't over till the fat lady sings" in that song. Just in case you were wondering.

September

Whoa, I went a whole month without posting.

But...

We are going to be moving into our newly completed apartment this weekend!!

Then the computer will be out in the open instead of in Ana's room. It's tough for me to get stuff done on it in here.

I am consistently getting all the hours I need at work now and I feel pretty comfortable with what I am doing.

I have submitted one secondary application for med school and I am working on a few more. My letters of recommendation should all be done now and arriving in a few days. I will try to get all the essays done in that time.

Anyway, I need to go tell University of Washington why I am applying to them specifically. See you later!

Until then - enjoy as much or as little of this cartoon as you would like. I remember watching when I was a kid.

I remember watching this one too. Mostly I like the first part.

I love this skit. I need it every once in a while because... well, we don't have any money.

Don't forget about Peru 2-3 below.

Still Here

So, I figured I needed to post at least once in May.

The MCAT is tomorrow... I haven't really studied all that much still. I guess I was burnt out and cocky enough to decide to try it without studying too much. I took a practice test the other day and got a 33. I would be happy with that. So, today I am reviewing equations and physics concepts, photosynthesis, TCA cycle, a few o-chem reactions, and a few general chemistry things. I also need to practice writing a few 30 minute essays as well. I feel ok about it and if I had to guess my score right now it would be somewhere between 30-34. I hate that it will be a whole month until I see the results.

Work is going well still. I finally start working full time this week after vacation and MCAT. Really not a lot to say there but I enjoy what I am doing and I really like the other people I work with.

Erin is about to have the baby I think. We thought she might have it today or tomorrow but it looks like as long as she keeps taking it easy she will make it past the MCAT. I really don't want to get to Boise to take the test and then get a phone call from Erin on her way to the hospital. Probably not going to happen though.

And, since it is a bit of a pain for me to get my pictures on the computer here at my parents you get this random one from the internet. Enjoy.

Whoa, I only need 11 more posts for 100...

The internet is cool

I don't usually feel the need to watch too many sporting events on tv. That might be a little different if we actually had some kind of decent service. What we have now is a cheap antenna. Usually we can get ABC pretty well but sometimes it isn't quite good enough to read the score or actually see where the ball is at all times.

So, you can imagine my excitement when March Madness came around and I saw this.

It's pretty cool. You can watch the games live. The video quality is way better than my tv. I love the internet.

Saturday

A while ago I found a website with a bunch of cartoons like the ones below. Some of them were pretty funny. I especially liked these two at the time. Now if I could only remember how I found them and what the website was...

Good stuff

Some of you might have seen this already

Erin said this is "wrong". I think it's pretty funny. What do you think?
