In my unofficial journey of self-discovery (because I don't really have myself figured out as much as I'd like to think) I've uncovered a little fact about myself:
I am a nerd.
And not the I'm-so-nerdy-its-cool type of nerd. Just the dorky kind.
I discovered this several years ago when, for about 20 minutes, I sat analyzing the birthday patterns of my parents' children and grandchildren. (Which month is most common, which number is most common, summer or winter birthday patterns, etc.) Every so often I would tell Dave an interesting fact/pattern I noticed. After a while he started laughing and I realized that not everyone does that.
Since then I've noticed several "nerd-alert" things about me:
*I have no sense of style, design or fashion. And not even like I have a style and its kinda different. I have no idea what looks good and what doesn't. (I know that mis-matched is kinda cool, but does Ana's pink striped shirt, black plaid skirt and brown leggings look like mis-matched cute or like I don't take care of my children? I have no idea.) My home decorating tastes fluctuate depending on my mood and I have no idea how to fix my own hair and makeup.
*I prefer to do math in my head when I run. Math? What? Yes, that's right. I do story problems specifically.
*On our romantic getaway a few months ago, while soaking in our romantic bath for two, Dave and I had a 20 minute discussion on water density and displacement. (I brought it up.) So romantic.
*I also ask Dave questions like, "You add ice to water and the water melts the ice, but could there ever be a situation in which the ice would freeze the water?" I concocted a pretty elaborate hypothetical situation in my brain that answered this question, but I was most excited the other day when I discovered a real-life example: icicles!
*I requested that Dave give me a "lecture" on the immune system the other day. I even took notes.
*I love logic puzzles and Sudoku.
*I may or may not have gone on and on about how many pairs of socks I matched yesterday (50 pairs!) for long enough that Dave said, "enough about the socks!"
You see? I am a nerd. Maybe you all knew this already, but I'm just coming to terms with my own un-cool-ness. Its okay, though. Dave likes me.

bwahahahaha!! you had me laughing out loud, Erin. I'm more of a freak than a nerd, but I {heart} nerds. Without nerds, life would not be complete! (and seriously... I think that nerds are actually the cool crowd and the "cool" kids just have nothing interesting to say or think about, so they say they're "too cool" to be nerdy like that. bah!)
I noticed an interesting thing my sophomore year of high school. I had been to 9 different schools by that time... and in every single school I had a different "label". I was the same kid. I had the same likes and dislikes, I treated people the same, I dressed like I always did... but in each location I had a different label. I had been a nerd, a cast-off, a "smart kid", a nerd again, and even one of the popular crowd a couple times. By the time I hit my sophomore year I was done with labels. They were totally invalid, pathetic words that shallow people invented to make themselves feel better. So I stopped caring. And as the years progressed, I cared less and less. Life was much happier for me. It IS much happier for me. :)
And like you said about Dave... John loves me. No matter how crazy I am at times.
And that's pretty cool. ;)
Dave likes you because you're nerdy. You get so passionate about weird stuff (like folding 50 pairs of socks). And it must run in the family, because I'm the same way.
I'm a nerd too, but more of an English nerd. And an X-files nerd.
I think you are awesome, so if you are a nerd, you are an awesome nerd! :) (My kids think I am a nerd because I frequently use words like "awesome".)
I am a nerd also and
we will take over the world
Can I just say how awesome I think you are? Every post is funny or insightful! I LOVE reading your blog! And good for you for being a nerd- at least you think. Too many are satisfied with only learning what is new on facebook. I would love to talk to you about water displacement- though I would probably skip the math problems while running!
I write poetry. And I read way too much. And I talk to myself. You could possibly classify me as a poet-writing-too-much-reading-hermit-type-of-nerd. Something like that. But quite frankly I think you and I are pretty dang cool :)
I,too, am a nerd. I love Sudoku and word puzzles and though I wouldn't do math while running, I would be likely to recite poetry to myself, aloud, to keep track of my pace. I count my steps when taking the stairs, and I find myself fascinated with the way water is wet and other stuff made of atoms isn't wet. I'm thrilled to be in your club!!
